Die Legenden von Rübezahl sind altes böhmisches Volksgut, das Musäus aus Chroniken, Volksbüchern, den Schriften des Johannes Praetorius sowie aus mündlicher Überlieferung alter Bäuerinnen und eines Weimarer Originals zusammenstellte. Die volkstümliche Überlieferung hat er in lockere Erzählung gekleidet und den Gestalten in Denken und Handeln ein durchaus modernes Gepräge gegeben. In dieser Ausgabe wurden veraltete Ausdrücke behutsam modernisiert, sodass ein flüsssiges Lesen und Verstehen auch ohne Nachschlagen im Glossar möglich ist. Gebräuche, die der heutigen Jugend nicht mehr geläufig sind, werden im Glossar ausführlich erläutert. Romantische Holzstiche von Ludwig Richter, lockere Zeichnungen von Max Slevogt und kräftige Farbbilder von Wilhelm Stumpf illustrieren die Texte. Das Nachwort von Ludwig Storch schildert die Lebensumstände von Musäus in Weimar als Zeitgenosse von Goethe und Herder.
