Renart est le héros de ce recueil de 27 récits indépendants et, sans doute, d'auteurs différents (27 branches ) car il apparaît dans presque tous et triomphe souvent. Il s'agit d'histoires plaisantes mettant en scène des animaux. Chaque animal est doté d'un nom et d'un trait de caractère: Renart est un renard (on disait alors un goupil: le mot moderne vient du nom du personnage), il est très malin et trompeur sans scrupule; il dupe souvent son compagnon Ysengrin, le loup, fort mais stupide. Noble, le lion, est naïf et aussi orgueilleux que Chanteclerc, le coq; etc.
