La historia se centra en el relato del tío Tom, un esclavo afroamericano. La novela dramatiza la dura realidad de la esclavitud mientras muestra que el amor cristiano y la fe pueden superar algo tan destructivo como la esclavización. Fue la novela más vendida en el siglo XIX (y el segundo libro más comprado de la época, después de la Biblia).
