L'orthographe n'est pas un code purement technique; c'est une norme sociale, une cristallisation d'échanges sociaux complexes. Fixée au XIXe siècle, l'orthographe française est prise aujourd'hui dans un réseau de pratiques et de discours contradictoires: le code lui-même est resté stable (à quelques exceptions près) mais ses usages et surtout les significations qui lui sont accordées ont profondément changé. La transformation du rapport à l'orthographe est particulièrement sensible sur deux terrains: l'école et l'espace public français, notamment à l'occasion de la "guerre du nénufar", qui a fait rage au cours de l'hiver 1990-1991. Bernadette Wynants, Docteure en sociologie, est Chargée de cours à l'UNamur et chercheuse à l'Unité de sociologie de l'UCL.
