Der Autor schildert seine Kindheit auf dem elterlichen Bauernhof in Ostpreu en und die ersten Schuljahre in Erlenrode und Kuckerneese. Als Elfjähriger erlebt er mit der Mutter und zwei Brüdern die Flucht auf dem Treckwagen. Sie beginnt im Oktober 1944 und endet erst im April 1945 nach einer Fahrt von über 1000 km durch Ostpreu en, Westpreu en, Pommern, Mecklenburg, Niedersachsen bis nach Sievershausen bei Hannover. Die Zwischenstationen ihrer spannenden und dramatischen Fahrt werden mit eindrucksvoller Ehrlichkeit geschildert. Die Erzählung enthält zahlreiche Details, die oftmals seltsam und für die jüngere Generation unvorstellbar sind. Viele Begebenheiten sind menschlich sehr bewegend.
