Die schlafbezogene Atmungsstörung ist eine Störung der Atmung während des Schlafs, die durch einen anhaltenden erhöhten Widerstand der oberen Atemwege, eine partielle Obstruktion der oberen Atemwege oder eine vollständige Obstruktion gekennzeichnet ist und die Lungenventilation, die Sauerstoffversorgung oder die Schlafqualität beeinträchtigt. Das Spektrum reicht vom Schnarchen über eine partielle Obstruktion der oberen Atemwege bis hin zur obstruktiven Schlafapnoe (OSA). Die Pathophysiologie der pädiatrischen OSA ist vielschichtig. Jüngste Forschungsergebnisse deuten darauf hin, dass OSAS auf eine Kombination von Anomalien zurückzuführen sein kann. Die Polysomnographie ist zwar nach wie vor der Goldstandard, doch können auch andere Diagnosemethoden wie die Cephalometrie erprobt werden.
