In diesem Sinne bemerkt der politische Philosoph Karlfriedrich Herb: "Er entdeckt diese Wahrheit, die er dann immer propagieren wird, dass der Fortschritt nämlich immer sehr ambivalent ist und dass Wissenschaften und Künste keineswegs zur Moralisierung beitragen, sondern im Gegenteil das individuelle und kollektive Elend eigentlich noch grö er machen."
