Der Beginn der landesweiten Invasionen des irakischen Baath-Regimes in den Iran im Jahr 1359 begann mit der Bombardierung von Teheran und 19 weiteren Städten im Iran. Danach drangen Dutzende irakischer Infanterie- und Panzerdivisionen über die Grenzrouten in den Iran ein, und es fanden umfangreiche militärische Aktivitäten und Operationen im Iran statt. West-, Nordwest- und Südregionen des Irans waren betroffen. An den nordwestlichen Fronten, d. h. in Kurdistan und Aserbaidschan, beschränkten sich die irakischen Streitkräfte aufgrund der aktiven Präsenz iranischer Streitkräfte auf die Verstärkung von Befestigungen und die Besetzung einiger wichtiger Grenzhöhen.
