Bei der endodontischen Behandlung handelt es sich im Wesentlichen um ein Debridement-Verfahren zur Unterbrechung und Beseitigung des mikrobiellen Ökosystems, das mit dem Krankheitsprozess verbunden ist. Die Hauptursache für endodontische Misserfolge sind Mikroorganismen, die sich entweder nach der Behandlung im Wurzelkanalraum befinden oder sich im gefüllten Kanalsystem neu ansiedeln. Um solche Mikroorganismen zu eliminieren, besteht das primäre Ziel der endodontischen Behandlung in der Optimierung der Wurzelkanaldesinfektion und der Verhinderung einer erneuten Infektion durch eine gründliche Reinigung des Wurzelkanalsystems und dessen Befreiung von Mikrobiota und Ablagerungen. Intrakanale Medikamente zerstören die restlichen Mikroorganismen, Toxine und Restbakterien, die durch die chemomechanische Aufbereitung nicht entfernt werden können. Intrakanalmedikamente verhindern oder kontrollieren postoperative Schmerzen. Daher ist eine adäquate Reinigung und Formung des Wurzelkanalsystems von grö ter Bedeutung für eine erfolgreiche endodontische Behandlung.
