Estuvo perseguido por sus escritos en Puerto Rico, Cuba, España, Francia e Inglaterra. Viajó por medio mundo, Puerto Rico, La Habana, París, Madrid, Salamanca, Argelia, Roma, Marruecos, Berlín, Venecia, Reinosa, Londres, y escribió lo que vio. Afirma José Luis Cano (1990) que sus crónicas provocaban escándalo, amenazas y duelos a pistola.
