Synopsis "Getting to Know the Insects (in English)"
Most people recognize the differences between the types of insects through personal experience. This booklet uses words and pictures to help the student better understand what their "eyes" are telling them. The drawings used are line-sketches that are meant to be colored or traced by the students as the examine collections or discoveries in nature. The diversity of the insect world is introduced in an illustrated booklet. The complexity of the "Tree of Life" is described by examining the philology of the cecropia moth. The booklet focuses on the physical features of the Class Insecta such as wings, antennae, and mouth parts that are used to classify these animals into their Orders. Eight major Orders are presented; ants-wasps-bees, beetles, butterflies-moths-skippers, dragonflies-damselflies, true bugs, cicadas-hoppers-aphids, flies-mosquitoes, and grasshoppers-crickets-katydids. An additional seven Orders with smaller diversity are also described because of their social or environmental importance; mayflies, termites, fishflies-dobsonflies, lice, earwigs, roaches, and mantids. Hand-drawn sketches are used to emphasize examples of the differences between the Orders. The booklet contains 35 pages including more than 80 drawings.
