Der Pirarucu gilt mit einer Gesamtlänge von etwa 3 Metern und einem Gewicht von über 200 kg als der grö te Sü wasser-Schuppenfisch der Welt. Aufgrund der Überfischung ist sein Fang im Bundesstaat Amazonas von der IBAMA offiziell ganzjährig verboten, mit Ausnahme von Anbau- oder Bewirtschaftungsgebieten, wie es im Mamirauá-Reservat für nachhaltige Entwicklung seit 1999 der Fall ist. In Anbetracht seiner Relevanz zielt diese Arbeit darauf ab, eine wirtschaftliche, soziale und ökologische Analyse der gemeinschaftlichen Bewirtschaftung von Pirarucu (Arapaima spp.) im Sektor Jarauá - RDS Mamirauá zwischen 1999 und 2015 durchzuführen.
