Ein Hauptanliegen des Autors - er selbst ist Geistlicher der Orthodoxen Kirche - ist es dabei, der Bedeutung des Franziskus von Rom nachzuspüren, die dieser sowohl für die eigene Kirche als in einem besonderen Ausma gerade auch für alle jene besitzt, die sich jenseits der Grenzen dieser Glaubensgemeinschaft befinden. Jorge Mario Bergoglio ist fraglos eine beeindruckende Persönlichkeit; gerade auch dieser Tatsache versucht das Buch bei aller grundsätzlichen Distanz gegenüber der Institution des Papsttums Rechnung zu tragen. Das in den Text eingearbeitete Quellenmaterial, das vor allem den Argentinier auf dem römischen Bischofsstuhl zu Wort kommen lässt, soll seinen Beitrag dazu leisten, Mensch und Werk in entsprechend-authentischer Weise darzustellen.
