La fluorosi è un problema endemico che interessa diverse zone del Paese. La tossicità del fluoro può manifestarsi sia come fluorosi dentale che come fluorosi scheletrica. Come segno precoce di fluorosi dentale, i denti perdono il loro aspetto lucido e si sviluppano macchie bianche come il gesso. In seguito, queste macchie bianche diventano gialle e talvolta marroni o nere e, nei casi più gravi, la perdita di smalto conferisce ai denti un aspetto corroso. Studi dettagliati sulle alterazioni dello smalto che si verificano nella fluorosi dentale umana sono indispensabili per comprendere i meccanismi patogenetici dell'azione del fluoro sulla struttura dentale con conseguente formazione di chiazze.
