Synopsis "Effect of orthodontic appliance therapy in obstructive sleep apnoea (in English)"
Continuous Positive airway pressure (CPAP) is the primary therapy for individuals with symptomatic OSA of any severity. The current first choice therapy is continuous positive airways pressure that keeps the upper airway patent during sleep. However, this treatment can be difficult for patients to tolerate and comply with on a long-term basis. Oral appliances has been proposed as an alternative to continuous positive pressure therapy. They are designed to keep the upper airway open by either advancing the lower jaw forward or by keeping the mouth open during sleep. They also improves daytime sleepiness, increases oxygen saturation, reduces the frequency and intensity of snoring, improves sleep quality for both patients who snore and their bed partners and also considering the patient adherence and compliance, oral appliances has been proposed as an alternative to CPAP.
