Als am 24. August 1939 die Nachricht von der Unterzeichnung des deutsch-sowjetischen Nichtangriffsvertrages verkündet wurde, hielt die Welt schockiert den Atem an. Der Nichtangriffspakt, welcher auch als „Hitler-Stalin-Pakt" oder „Molotow-Ribbentrop-Pakt" in die Geschichte einging, war ein auf zehn Jahre befristetes Abkommen. Dieses knüpfte an den Berliner Vertrag von 1926 und damit an die kurzlebige Friedenspolitik zwischen Russland und Deutschland in den 1930er Jahren an. Der mit einem oberflächlichen Blick auf den Namen friedlich anmutende Vertrag hatte jedoch einen trügerischen Charakter. Denn bereits der Wortlaut dieses Übereinkommens zwischen dem faschistischen Deutschland und der kommunistischen Sowjetunion offenbarte seine aggressiven und verbrecherischen Ziele.
