Während eines Aufenthalts in Zürich lernte er an Pfingsten 1888 den Naturprediger Johannes Guttzeit (1853-1935) kennen, der ihm das Vorbild wurde für die Erzählung Der Apostel. Unter seinem Einfluss und dem des Psychiaters, Hirnforschers und Alkoholgegners Auguste Forel wandelte sich Hauptmann für eine Zeit lang zum Lebensreformer und Abstinenzler.
