Known as the "King of the Wild Frontier", he grew up poor and uneducated but ended up as a Congressman from Tennessee. He had a reputation for deer and bear hunting and storytelling. His active participation in the Creek War, part of the War Of 1812, saw fierce battles with the Creek Indians.
