Ein reprasentatives Flugelretabel der Spatgotik mit uberregionalem Rang ist am Beginn des 21. Jh.s in die bedeutende Adelsresidenz Schloss Eggenberg zuruckgekehrt - Anlass fur diese umfassende und rezente kunstwissenschaftliche Studie. In den 1970ern fand man bei Bauuntersuchungen der spatgotischen Marienkapelle des Schlosses einen Kardinalsablass von 1470, der das Stifterehepaar der Kapelle, Balthasar und Radegunde Eggenberger, namentlich erwahnt. Da die im Ablass genannten Heiligen - die Gottesmutter Maria, Fabian und Sebastian - auch auf der Mitteltafel des Retabels visualisiert werden, kann davon ausgegangen werden, dass das Stifterehepaar auch das Flugelretabel in Auftrag gegeben und somit inhaltlich nachweisbar gepragt hat. Es gelang die Frage, wie sich diese individuellen Konzeptideen visuell widerspiegeln, zu beantworten und einige Forschungsfragen grundlegend zu klaren.
