The 1977 Chinese entrance examination was a very special event as China resumed its college and university enrollment after eleven years with the "Cultural Revolution." Binyao Zheng, author of this book, was enrolled in that prestigious class majoring in English language and literature. He was a self-motivated learner since childhood when educational opportunities were rare in China. He taught elementary school mathematics, and middle school and college English before coming to the U.S. After receiving his Ph.D. in educational psychology and research from the University of Memphis, he joined the faculty of Kennesaw State University in 1997 specializing in teacher education. The first part of this book, Memories of China, recalls his childhood through the college years; the second part, Memories of America, reflects on his experiences as a graduate student and then as a faculty member in the U.S. The essays adopt qualitative, reflective, and analytical methods to link personal experiences to theories and concepts of human development, educational psychology, and sociology.
