Synopsis "Children of Hamada Han: Mining Ancestors' Stories from the National Diet Library (in English)"
I did not know much about my family history when my mother died, but after writing my first book, Ocha Teacher, my interest in Japan's history deepened, as did my curiosity about my ancestors. By Googling the name of my great-grandfather, I discovered some books to which he had contributed writings, but they were not interesting enough to use them in my story. It would have been dreadfully boring because they were war-related. My great-grandfather was a military officer who reported on the battle he was in charge of. In his other documents, he complimented his friends and relatives on their virtuous characters. Luckily, my great-grandfather had a lawyer cousin who wrote well. I have translated his writing and included it in this book. Also, the lawyer cousin had a lawyer relative whose story captivated me, so I included that, too. The children of Hamada Han, whom you will meet in this book, left some of their stories behind in the National Diet Library. I am glad I found them.
