The Haikus in this book are inspired by Jerrell's desire to comprehend the essence of what it means to be human and a love of creating word patterns. He draws upon a lifetime of experiences, interactions with family and friends, and his background in psychology, to explore love, loss, life, war, death, grief, family, humor, finances, freedom, pollution, nature, and philosophy. Jerrell has written poetry of all sorts for 76 years. Quotes from Samuel Taylor Coleridge, 'Poetry is the best words in the best order, ' and Shakespeare, 'brevity is the soul of wit, ' influence his style. Hence, he adapted the standard Haiku format to suit the English language by not strictly conforming to syllabic count. Instead, he sometimes eliminates extraneous words to achieve a better flow and tone.
