Nur im Akt des Schreibens konnte Roth konstruktiv mit seinen heillosen inneren Ambivalenzen umgehen. Er spielte ironisch oder pathetisch, kindlich oder listig täuschend mit Klischees und Konventionen des Darstellens, Erzählens, Metaphorisierens, Idiomatisierens, der personalen und gegenständlichen Identität. Eine bemerkenswerte Ausnahme bilden Klischees der Geschlechter: Sie wandern nahezu ungefiltert in Roths Literatur. Alle religiösen, politischen, biographischen Positionsbestimmungen Roths waren dagegen stets (auch) Produkte bestimmter Schreibstrategien.
