Der zygomaticomaxilläre Komplex (ZMC) spielt eine Schlüsselrolle für die Struktur, die Funktion und das ästhetische Erscheinungsbild des Gesichtsskeletts. Er sorgt für eine normale Wangenkontur und trennt den Orbitalinhalt von der Fossa temporalis und der Kieferhöhle. Er stützt den seitlichen Augapfel, der für das beidäugige Sehen notwendig ist. Bei Jochbeinfrakturen, die durch eine Auseinandersetzung verursacht werden, ist das linke Jochbein am häufigsten betroffen, da Rechtshänder häufiger betroffen sind, nicht jedoch bei einseitigen Frakturen, die durch Autounfälle verursacht werden. Laut Ellis und Mitarbeitern sind bilaterale Jochbeinfrakturen selten und machen 4 % der Jochbeinfrakturen aus; sie sind meist die Folge von Traumata bei Verkehrsunfällen und nicht von solchen bei Auseinandersetzungen. Bei 25 % der Patienten, die ZMC-Frakturen erleiden, treten andere damit verbundene Gesichtsfrakturen auf. Das Ziel der Behandlung sollte daher die Wiederherstellung von Kosmese und Funktion sein.
