La disfunzione temporo-mandibolare è un'entità patologica legata a problemi funzionali che interessano l'articolazione, i muscoli masticatori e le strutture associate. Attualmente la sua incidenza è sempre più comune nei bambini e negli adolescenti, per cui è necessario identificare i fattori correlati allo stato funzionale dell'articolazione temporo-mandibolare. È stata condotta una ricerca descrittiva, trasversale e correlazionale su un campione di 67 adolescenti di età compresa tra i 14 e i 18 anni, da cui è emerso che l'ATM è più diffusa nelle femmine, indipendentemente dall'età. Il superamento, lo scivolamento dalla relazione centrica alla posizione di massima intercuspidazione, le interferenze occlusali laterali e lo stress sono associati al TMD e ai suoi sintomi.
