Synopsis "Ack-Ack: The 411th AAA, The Third Army, and Reflections on a Citizen-Soldier in the Second World War (in English)"
The American military in World War II was replete with noteworthy individuals, from the highest ranks on down. The core of this fighting force was the renowned-yet-ordinary citizen soldier: the man who was not meant for combat, yet still excelled in it, and who would go on to shape the postwar world, graduating from warfighting to the arts of peace. Such was my grandfather, a sergeant in the 411th AAA. I followed his journey through the Second World War via family stories, a trove of old photographs, unit documentation from the national archives, and a bit of detective work. By piecing together his and his battalion's saga, I gained not only an appreciation for him as a person, but also a philosophical grasp on the contradictory nature of the citizen soldier. In this work, I have essayed to join thoughts on these conundrums with pithy military history, humorous family anecdotes, and the quiet-yet-difficult joy of American patriotism.
