Vampires have isolated themselves in their cities ever since the Species War, but they still rule from the shadows. When a friend suggests looking for work with a vampire, he quickly finds a mysterious job listing that promises to fill all of his requirements. He earns an interview and as he meets his prospective employer, he falls hopelessly in love with the ancient vampire who rules his house. Kairos's job is deceptively simple, but as he discovers more and more about his house and about vampires in general, he learns that he's caught in the middle of a conflict that's been brewing for a hundred years. Vampires and humans alike are dying in an illegal drug trade and his job is more closely linked to the chaos than he anticipates. When his life is put in danger, he realizes that taking this job might have been a mistake, but he can't resist the control his boss has over him the darkness of a vampire's lair.
